These days life is reminding me there’s nothing more inspiring than a good example. Words are wonderful but nothing sticks like seeing someone live it.
A while back I caught up with a good friend I hadn’t seen in years. Our lives had taken different paths and it was clear we might meet up from time to time, but our close friendship was a thing of the past.
When we parted she gave me a big hug and said, “I love you.”
I responded in kind but felt humbled by her open-heartedness. Given the differences in our lives it seemed such a generous offering.
Her example was one of many poignant lessons in the power of love to disintegrate separation and soften resistance. It inspired me to open my heart a little bigger than I think possible, soften my exterior a little more, and to extend love even when it isn’t asked for.
We never know who is watching our good examples in any area of life or when that might be just what they needed to hear or see.
And we often don’t know the power of love until it is given to us when we least expect it.
